Academics

Unlike the traditional, linear model in which subjects are compartmentalized, the Montessori curriculum is organized as a spiral of integrated studies. Lessons are introduced individually through the use of concrete materials in the early years. They are then reintroduced with increasing complexity and abstraction as the students grow older and move through the Montessori program.

And yes, there is a definite and specific Montessori curriculum for each grade level, from pre-school through Middle School. The academic program is strenuous and fascinating at the same time because it allows students to progress at their own pace and is based on understanding-not rote memorization.

The extensive Montessori training undertaken by each RMS teacher includes creating individual books (or albums) for every academic topic from mathematics to broader cultural topics. Visitors to our classrooms are often astonished to see several students hard at work on math in one section of the room while other groups are doing research on geography or botany, creative writing or spelling.

All the while, a quiet hum of activity without loud commands from the teacher characterizes the students. Everyone is busily engaged in work which is interesting and meaningful.
