General Admissions Requirements and Procedures:

  • Parents tour the school and meet with the Director of Admissions. Parents need to submit an application and application fee.
  • Academic records and recommendations are requested from previous schools for children applying to Kindergarten - 8th grade.
  • Once the Admissions Committee has determined the number of spaces available by level, interviews with a Montessori teacher or the Director of Studies will be scheduled.
  • For admission to the RMS Toddler Class, RMS siblings are given priority consideration. Applications must be received by the due date set by the Admissions Office. In order to be considered a sibling, the current RMS student must be reenrolled for the upcoming fall school year. After RMS siblings are considered, the Toddler class is filled based on application receipt date. All Toddler candidates must be interviewed. Candidates must be at least 24 months of age to be interviewed.
  • For all Primary, Elementary, and Middle School applicants, the Admissions Committee makes all decisions with regard to admission. Each child's academic record, recommendations, interview, and "fit" at RMS are considered in each admission decision.
  • Decisions for first-round consideration are made in late February. Parents are notified in writing whether their child is accepted, wait listed, or declined.
  • Parents must return the signed Enrollment Contract, tuition deposit and new family fee within ten days of notification that space is available.
  • RMS has rolling admissions - when a space arises, applicants in the waiting pool will be offered a contract.

How Are Students Selected?

The Admissions Committee carefully considers all applicants. RMS seeks to enroll students of families who are committed to a Montessori education and to the RMS program through Middle School. Our goal is to enroll students who will be a "good fit" with the RMS educational and school-administered programs. All parties - student, family, and the RMS community - are considered when determining "fit". The admissions process is designed to make clear our approach to learning and to determine if an applicant can be sucessful in this kind of learning community. This being said, it is also true that we have the fewest openings and accept fewer students in the higher grades.

The Richmond Montessori School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, or any other protected class in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
