Application Process

We welcome inquiries and applications from all families with children from 2.5 and 14 years old. We think of it as enrolling families, not just students and our goal is to select families who will both benefit from and contribute to what Richmond Montessori School has to offer.

General Admissions Requirements and Procedures:

  • 1.Parents are encouraged to visit Richmond Montessori School before making application. A visit will give parents the opportunity to observe our classrooms, experience our community and have questions answered to determine if RMS is the right place for their child and family.

  • 2.Parents need to submit an application and application fee to begin the process. Academic records and teacher recommendations are requested by our Admissions Office for students applying to Kindergarten, Elementary and Middle School.

  • 3.Applicants are invited for a visit with a teacher at the level for which they are applying. Applicants applying to Kindergarten, Elementary and Middle School may be invited for an in-class visit.

  • 4.Parents participate in an interview with the Admissions Officer during their child’s visit.

  • 5. Every applicant who completes the process is considered for admissions by the Admissions Team. The applicant’s visit, academic record, teacher recommendations and “fit” at RMS are considered in the decision to accept, decline or defer admissions.

  • 6.Once an enrollment contract is offered, parents must return the Contract, tuition deposit and new family fee within ten days of written notification.

  • 7.RMS has a rolling admission – when a space becomes available, an applicant in the waiting pool will be considered for that opening. Applicants are accepted throughout the school year.

  • 8.RMS gives admissions preference to siblings of current students, Montessori transfers and former Montessori students.

  • 9.Toddler applicants must be 30 months by the beginning of the school year to be offered a contract. Toddler visits can occur when a child reached twenty-four months old.

How are students selected?

The Admissions Team carefully considers all applicants. RMS seeks to enroll applicants of families who are committed to a Montessori education and to the RMS community through Middle School. Our goal is to enroll applicants who will be a good “fit” with the RMS educational and school-administered programs. All parties – applicant, family and the RMS community – are considered when determining “fit”. The admissions process is designed to clarify our approach to learning and to determine if an applicant can be successful in this kind of learning environment.

Historically, there are more openings at the Primary level of our program. This is a result of our high reenrollment and accelerated academic programs. We accept fewer candidates into our Elementary and Middle School.

The Richmond Montessori School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, or any other protected class in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletic and other school-administered programs.
