As we joyfully welcomed back all of our students on September 2, our school community had a second reason to celebrate. This day marked the official closing on the Or Atid property. It is truly an exciting time for RMS!
For several years, the Board of Directors and the Building and Grounds Committee have been dedicated to finding solutions for our growing facility needs. Our wish is to create the classroom and amenity space to accommodate the increasing number of students who wish to stay to complete their entire Montessori education continuum. With this property purchase we gain 4.75 acres for a total of 11 contiguous acres.
Over the next several months the Building and Grounds Committee will create a Plan of Development that includes new Montessori classrooms, a performing arts and music space, an "official" gym and much needed parking. Additionally, new pedestrian paths will not only link the entire campus, but allow us to reclaim and retain green space for "outdoor classrooms," nature study, and a walkable campus community. It is a fantastic opportunity for the Board of Trustees to plan the future use of new and existing buildings and land while strengthening the safety and security of our 11 acre campus!
While we must attend to county regulations and codes required to convert the Or Atid property to school use, we hope to identify some short-term uses for the previous Sanctuary building. The upstairs of the Sanctuary provides a performance and meeting space with an amphitheater feel. The comfortable seating, sound system, and great acoustics will create a special environment for class plays and music performances. What a thrill for students to perform in such a warm, wonderful space. For the first time in its history, Richmond Montessori School will have a dedicated performing arts space!
For the next few months, Congregation Or Atid will continue to lease the back buildings as they look for their new permanent home. I know we will all be respectful of their religious holidays and events as we continue our good neighbor relations. |
