School History

1965 – RMS Founded in April
1966 – RMS opens at 210 South Boulevard to 40 students on September 19th
1967 – RMS adds classroom space at 2619 Floyd Avenue
1972 – Richmond Montessori Parents’ Association (RMPA) is formed
1973 – Groundbreaking held at North Parham Road site
1976 – The manatee was chosen as the school mascot
1982 – On-site after school care begins
1983 – AMS accredited VCU-Montessori Teachers Education Program begins at RMS
1989 – RMS pupils send “friendship boxes” to earthquake stricken San Francisco students
1990 – AMS accreditation received by RMS, one of only 11 schools nationally accredited
1993 – RMS recognized as one of the best preschools in America by “Child Magazine”
1996 – Long Range Plan adopted and new facilities construction begins
1998 – New administration, classroom and multi-purpose facilities dedicated
2000 – Capital Campaign exceeds $500,000 goal
2004 – New Science Resource and classroom facilities are dedicated
