Montessori was founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, educator and innovator, who developed a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adolescence.
Founded in 1965, Richmond Montessori School is the only Montessori school in the Richmond area and surrounding counties that is fully accredited by two external organizations – the American Montessori Society and Virginia Association of Independent Schools. The RMS Board of Trustees is responsible for establishing the strategic direction for the school. The Board, administration, faculty, and staff have worked diligently to advance our mission based on the strategic directions and goals.
We’ve used the strategic plan as a guide in decision making while continuously evaluating progress, strategies, and actions based on current environment, resources, and opportunities.
Richmond Montessori School recently completed a capital campaign for the construction of an Upper Elementary & Science Building on North Campus. Fundraising completed in less than 18 months through the combined support of generous RMS community donors – parents, grandparents, faculty & staff, past parents and friends – as well as the support of external foundations. Construction on this building was completed in the spring of 2014.
