Third-year primary students in Ms. Julisa’s class had their first encounter with this year’s “Book Buddies,” six-graders in Ms. Fojtik and Ms. Linton’s class. They interviewed each other to get to know one another.
Each Friday afternoon, the older students pair up with younger ones as they read aloud. They assist and support the new readers with encouraging words and by taking notes on areas of improvement. Next, it’s the six graders turn to read aloud, and they read both a book in English and one in Spanish.
After connecting through reading and working outside the classroom together, the primary students escort the six-graders to North Campus for a brief visit in the upper elementary classrooms.
“The P3s are usually excited about the whole experience –especially the fact that the older students have lockers for their books,” says Ms. Julisa. “They also feel that they have big brothers and big sisters at RMS as the older kids give them hugs or high fives when they see them at school.”
