Our History
1965
Our Founding Year
RMS was established in 1965 by a group of mothers, led by Betty Dillon and Mona West, who were inspired by Maria Montessori’s educational methodology. Influenced by the national resurgence of Montessori education, from the start they wanted RMS to be an authentic Montessori school that educated students from toddlers through upper elementary and beyond.
RMS began in a house located on Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond. A board determined to offer students an impeccable education and two Montessori certified teachers from Ireland opened their doors to welcome 40 preschool students. The diligence and commitment of these early visionaries planted the seeds for the school we know and love today.
1966
Our Commitment to Community
At a time when many schools in Virginia were resisting integration, RMS opened its doors to families of all races and backgrounds, embracing diversity as a core value from the very beginning.
1974
RMPA is Established
The Richmond Montessori Parent Association (RMPA) was established in 1972 to provide parents with an opportunity to participate actively in their child’s school experience. Carol Cooper served as the first RMPA President.
1979
RMS Moves to Parham Road
RMS moved from South Boulevard to its current location on Parham Road in Henrico, Virginia.
1979
The First Campaign
The first RMS Annual Giving campaign took place during the 1979–1980 school year, inspiring a lasting tradition of generosity from parents and staff to strengthen and enhance the school community.
1990
RMS Gains Accreditation
Richmond Montessori School earned accreditation from the American Montessori Society in 1990–1991 and from the Virginia Association of Independent Schools in 2001–2002. In 1993, Child Magazine recognized RMS as one of the top ten best preschools in America.
1995 - 1997
South Campus Expansion
In 1995, RMS purchased the adjacent property, expanding the school’s campus. In 1997, RMS expanded the South Campus building to provide additional space for the growing school community.
2009
RMS Purchases 501 North Parham
RMS purchased the property at 501 North Parham Road, establishing what is now the school’s North Campus.
2012 - 2014
North Campus Expansions
From 2012–2014, RMS expanded its North Campus at 501 N. Parham Road, culminating in the dedication of a new academic building in 2014.
Our SCHOOL Today
RMS Today
Today, Richmond Montessori School is a vibrant community serving children from 18 months through eighth grade across our South and North Campuses. Rooted in Montessori principles and shaped by six decades of growth, RMS continues to evolve while remaining committed to what has always been at the heart of our school: nurturing curious, capable, and compassionate learners prepared for whatever comes next.
