Richmond Montessori School graduate Debbie Goldstone Horwitz was honored with the Alumni Achievement Award at The Steward School, her high school.
Goldstone is the sister of RMS’s PE Teacher, Page Brookshier, and a former student of the RMS Director of Studies Christine McDonald.
In her acceptance speech given at the school’s convocation ceremony, she recalled her time at RMS.
“What I remember best about Montessori is that they let me be me—don’t get me wrong—there was structure and discipline, but I was allowed to shine at Montessori and my personality was embraced,” she said.
She received the award for overcoming breast cancer and for her impact on other women through her nonprofit Myself: Together Again, dedicated to empowering and educating women with the illness.
“Montessori was a very special place for me. While at Montessori my mom passed away from cancer. The teachers really took me under their wing and their support of me went beyond the classroom. I have the feelings of feeling important and needed.”
